Description of narrative structure and use of film language

Structure/form – the sequence of events (linear or non-linear narrative)

The structure of the film is mainly linear narrative but it does include some non-linear elements such as a loop.

Mise-en-scene (setting/location, props, lighting, costume etc.,)

home, college, street, city,

bag, phone, briefcase, religious symbol i.e jewellery,

combination of high key and low key

casual clothing

Cinematography (shot types and camera movements)

  • Handheld - this would be because we want to create the idea that it follows the character throughout the day. Because it isn't on a stand it has a more light-hearted approach.

  • Point of View - again similar to the handheld shots, this puts us in the mind of the main character.

  • Medium close ups - This will be the more standard shot we will use throughout, it allows us to set up scenes with the character in it and another person in terms of conversation.

  • Establishment shot - If we have to use a different place in a new scene, it notifies the viewer of the change in setting.

Sound  (dialogue, voice-over, effects and/or soundtrack)

  • narration - we intend on using this so the character can tell the audience about himself throughout the course of the film. Our use of this will mainly be used for internal dialogue between the character's internal persona versus the person we show the audience.

  • music - this will be used in various ways, to set the scene, the pacing and possibly to show a change in emotion.

Editing (pace and style)

  • fast cuts - these will be used to simulate the feeling that everything is mundane and add to the loop we also intend to use

  • As the character goes through their realization the general pace of the sequence will slow down to give effect into what has happened.

  • looping - we intend on setting up a loop in order to try to create a feeling that the main character’s life needs a change, that something isn’t right in their daily routine.
